Niederwald, located in Hays and Caldwell counties, was established by German pioneers in the 1890’s. Built along the old Austin to San Antonio road known as the Camino Real (Highway 21). The name Niederwald means “low wood” which refers to the growth of mesquite trees that grew where the Germans set up their new community. Niederwald incorporated as a city in 1987. The Niederwald City Council meets the second Monday of each month, 7 p. m. at Niederwald City Hall.
